About midnight Saturday, September 13, 2008 Hurricane Ike struck Galveston. Although windspeeds indicated this was a strong Category 2 storm, not a big deal for coastal communities built to withstand hurricanes, what set Ike apart was it profound size and subsequent surge. As the brunt of the storm made landfall, the edges of Ike stretched from Florida to Cancun!
The wind damage to Galveston Island was modest, but the amount of sea water pushed ashore by this bizarre storm created destruction not seen in over a century. In addition to the widespread property damage, loss of human life remains to be fully calculated. It is estimated that a month after the storm, over one hundred persons remain unaccounted for. Nine month later about two dozens souls remain missing.
With the distractions of an economy in deep trouble and a Presidential election, national media attention on Galveston Island faded. For those of us who are here trying to put the pieces back together, we do not seek pity or even sympathy. We do hope for ongoing support from the rest of the country as the rebuilding continues.
