How to escape a hurricane ravaged city

October 1, 2008

Go to another hurricane ravaged city, of course. Kathy and I decided we needed a break from muck and misery. We stuck everything away and headed off to The Big Easy. What better place to commiserate than New Orleans?

We joined Colin and Diane (son and daughter-in-law) for a respite. They flew in from their home in New York City for a refreshing break filled with gustatory decadence and alcohol overindulgence.

Coincidentally, we connected with our old friends the Paces and Bairds, further reinforcing the value of friends and how inconsequential our transient troubles will probably seem some time in the future.

Of course we indulged at Gallitoire's, Bayona and Acme. We spun around the Carousel bar at the Montlione and drank Hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's. But we also visited the Ninth Ward where homeowners with far less than we are still busily rebuilding their neighborhood. Whites and blacks, next door neighbors, kids playing in the yards, all inspiring us to what Galveston can certainly do if these guys can.
